Good Maintenance
for Good Mileage
You can significantly cut back on your
fuel consumption by keeping your vehicles in
good running condition.
Keeping the engine properly tuned is important.
Repairing an engine that is badly out of tune or
that has failed its emissions test will improve
its gas mileage by about 4 percent, depending on
the type of repair and how well it was done.
Fixing a serious problem, such as a faulty
oxygen sensor, can improve a car’s gas mileage
by as much as 40 percent.
The air filter keeps dust and other impurities
from damaging a car’s engine. It should be
checked regularly. Replacing a clogged air
filter can improve gas mileage by about 10
percent. Replacing a dirty air filter will not
only save gas, but protect the engine.
Properly inflated tires last longer, are safer,
and improve gas mileage by about 3.3 percent.
Under-inflated tires lower gas mileage by about
0.4 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure in
all four tires.
By using the grade of motor oil recommended by
the manufacturer, you can improve your gas
mileage by 1 to 2 percent. Conversely, for
example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine
designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage
by 1 to 2 percent. Using 5W-30 in an engine
designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by
1 to 1.5 percent. Also, select motor oil that
says “Energy Conserving” on the API performance
symbol. This means that it contains
friction-reducing additives.
