Drive sensibly: This is always good advice. Aggressive driving such as speeding, rapid acceleration, and frequent braking, or riding the brakes, is dangerous and wastes gas. Driving sensibly can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is safer for everyone. By driving sensibly, you may save more than money on gas.

While each vehicle is different, most vehicles reach optimal fuel economy between 55 and 60 mph. Gas mileage economy usually decreases at speeds above 60 mph. The optimal fuel economy benefit ranges from 7 to 23 percent, depending on the type of vehicle.

Remove excess weight from your vehicle to gain an additional 1 to 2 percent of fuel economy per 100 pounds. The percentage is derived from the extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight. The smaller the vehicle, the greater the percentage. Avoid carrying around heavy items in your vehicle.

Avoid idling whenever possible. Larger vehicles on idle waste more gas than smaller vehicles.

Using cruise control, you can maintain a constant speed and consequently save gas.

Use your overdrive gears. Your vehicle’s engine speed will go down and you will reduce engine wear as well as save gas.
