Excellent Fleet
Vehicle Options
There are many new types of energy
efficient vehicles on the market today and quite
a few of them are designed for fleet use.
Flex-fuel vehicles (FFV), which have a single
fuel tank, fuel system, and engine, run on
regular unleaded gasoline and alcohol (ethanol
or methanol) in any mixture. You may use 100
percent gasoline, E85 (85 percent ethanol, 15
percent gasoline), or M85 (85 percent methanol,
15 percent gasoline) or any combination.
A bi-fuel vehicle has two separate fuel systems
which can be easily switched. One fuel system
runs on gasoline or diesel and the other runs on
compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied
propane gas (LPG).
Gasoline-powered vehicles can be modified to run
on CNG. Vehicles can also be designed to use
only CNG or as a bi-fuel vehicle that can also
run on gas.
Gasoline-powered vehicles can be modified to run
on LPG. LPG has been used in transportation for
over 60 years and is the most common fuel
alternative to gasoline. Vehicles can be
designed to use only LPG or as bi-fuel vehicles
that also use gasoline.
Electric vehicles (EVs) using batteries are
quiet and pollution free. Their range is
limited, though recent advances in motor and
battery technology have made them more practical
than before. They are the only vehicles that
meet California's Zero Emission Vehicle
requirement. However, the generation of
electricity is not pollution free; therefore,
EVs have an indirect environmental impact.
Still, they are much cleaner than vehicles using
gasoline.
