Real-Time Vehicle
Tracking
Whether passive or real time, all systems
use signals from a satellite array to determine
a vehicle’s location and speed.
Installing GPS tracking technology in a vehicle
lets you can monitor its location and speed from
your office. With a passive tracking system, you
have to wait until the vehicle returns and
download the information from the onboard GPS
unit into your computer. This is sufficient for
many applications, but if you need real-time
vehicle tracking, you have to buy a more
elaborate system.
Whether passive or real time, all systems use
signals from a satellite array to determine a
vehicle’s location and speed. The passive system
records the information for later download,
while a real-time system transmits the
information as it is occurring. You are able to
track your driver from moment to moment.
Real-time vehicle tracking allows you to
maintain continual control over your fleet of
vehicles. If a driver goes over the speed limit,
you can call him up and suggest he slow down. If
you see a driver leave her assigned route, you
can call her and ask her what’s up.
Real-time vehicle tracking systems are more
expensive than passive tracking systems. For
most applications, passive tracking is fine; it
still allows you to improve fleet efficiency and
employee performance. Even if you can't
immediately monitor a driver's activity, you
will have an accurate record of the vehicle’s
activity after downloading the information.
